How it works

Metres = value × factor of the source unit (inch = 0.0254 m, foot = 0.3048 m, yard = 0.9144 m, mile = 1,609.344 m); then divide by the target unit's factor

All length units here are defined against the metre. The millimetre is 0.001 m and the kilometre is 1,000 m by the metric prefixes, while the imperial units are fixed by definition: 1 inch = 0.0254 m exactly, 1 foot = 0.3048 m exactly (12 inches), 1 yard = 0.9144 m exactly (3 feet), and 1 mile = 1,609.344 m exactly (5,280 feet). Converting goes through metres, so any pair of units uses the same two factors.

The trap in length work is rarely the factor — it is the display. A decimal result such as 8.20 feet is not 8 feet 20 inches; it is 8 feet and 0.2021 × 12 = about 2.4 inches. For heights, use the Centimeters to Feet and Inches page, which does that split for you. In workshops, decimal inches are often re-expressed as sixteenths — the Millimeters to Inches page shows that fraction view.

Rounding deserves one caution: convert first, round last. Rounding 2.54 cm to 2.5 cm before multiplying by a long length introduces an error that grows with the number, which is why this converter keeps full precision internally and only rounds the figure it displays.

Worked examples

Metres to feet and inches

Input
2.5 metres to feet.
Working
1 foot = 0.3048 m, so 2.5 ÷ 0.3048 = 8.2021 feet. The whole number is 8 feet, and 0.2021 × 12 = 2.43 inches.
Result
2.5 m = 8.20 ft, or 8 ft 2.4 in

Centimetres to inches

Input
185 cm to inches.
Working
1 inch = 2.54 cm, so 185 ÷ 2.54 = 72.8346.
Result
185 cm = 72.83 inches

Kilometres to miles

Input
10 km to miles.
Working
1 mile = 1,609.344 m = 1.609344 km, so 10 ÷ 1.609344 = 6.2137.
Result
10 km = 6.21 miles

Frequently asked questions

How many centimetres are in an inch, exactly?

Exactly 2.54. The inch has been defined as 25.4 millimetres since 1959, so centimetres to inches (divide by 2.54) and inches to centimetres (multiply by 2.54) are exact conversions, with any difference in the result coming only from display rounding.

Why is my result in decimal feet instead of feet and inches?

A general converter returns one number in one unit, so feet appear as a decimal. To read 8.2021 feet as a height, take 8 as the feet and multiply the remainder by 12: 0.2021 × 12 = 2.43 inches, giving 8 ft 2.4 in. The Centimeters to Feet and Inches converter does this split automatically.

How many feet are in a metre?

1 ÷ 0.3048 = 3.2808 feet. The common shortcut of 3.28 is fine for estimating, but over a 100-metre length it would understate the answer by about 0.08 feet — roughly an inch — which is why this page uses the exact 0.3048 m definition.

Is a yard exactly 3 feet in metric terms?

Yes. A yard is 3 feet, and since 1 foot = 0.3048 m exactly, 1 yard = 0.9144 m exactly. A 100-metre sprint distance is therefore 100 ÷ 0.9144 = 109.36 yards, noticeably longer than a 100-yard distance.

Can I convert a list of lengths in one go?

Yes. Use batch mode and paste one value per line; each line is converted with the same exact factor. That is the practical way to convert a full cut list, a set of room dimensions or a column of race splits without retyping the factor each time.
