The result is a decimal, and reading it correctly is the skill this page is built around: 5.84 feet means 5 whole feet plus 0.84 × 12 = about 10.1 inches, not 5 feet 84 of anything.

The table gives both forms for the common range — the decimal feet figure and the feet-and-inches split — because heights, room lengths and ceiling clearances are all spoken in feet and inches in imperial countries while being specified in metres almost everywhere else. Use the exact factor rather than the common 3.28 shortcut when the length is long. Over 25 metres the shortcut gives 82.00 feet against the exact 82.02 feet — a small gap on paper, and a visible one across the length of a building plot.

A height in metres

Frequently asked questions

How many feet are in a metre?

1 ÷ 0.3048 = 3.2808 feet, exactly derived from the definition of the foot as 0.3048 m. In feet and inches that is 3 ft 3.37 in, since 0.2808 × 12 = 3.37 inches. The table on this page carries the split for the metre values people look up most.

Why is 1.78 m written as 5 ft 10.1 in and not 5 ft 8 in?

Because the decimal part of the feet figure is a fraction of a foot, not inches. 1.78 m is 5.8399 feet; multiply the 0.8399 remainder by 12 and you get 10.08 inches. Reading the decimal digits as inches understates a height by about two inches in this case — a very common conversion slip.

Is multiplying by 3.28 close enough?

For estimating, yes; for recording, no. The exact factor is 3.28084 feet per metre. At 5 metres the shortcut is out by about 0.004 feet, but at 100 metres it is out by about 0.084 feet — a full inch. This page divides by the exact 0.3048 definition instead.
