Square metres to square feet
- Input
- 500 m² to square feet.
- Working
- 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m², so 500 ÷ 0.09290304 = 5,381.9552.
- Result
- 500 m² = 5,381.96 ft²

Area factors are length factors squared, which is where intuition fails: because 1 foot = 0.3048 m, one square foot is 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m² exactly — not a third of a square metre. Likewise a square inch is 0.0254² = 0.00064516 m², a square yard is 0.9144² = 0.83612736 m², and a square mile is 1,609.344² = 2,589,988.11 m². Every factor in the table follows from the length definitions in that way.
Land measures add two units defined directly in metric terms: a hectare is exactly 10,000 m² (a square 100 m on a side), and an acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 m², so 1 hectare = 10,000 ÷ 4,046.8564224 = 2.4711 acres. Property listings are the everyday trap here — a floor area quoted in square feet reads about 10.76 times larger than the same area in square metres, which flatters a listing if the unit goes unnoticed.
Convert the area as a whole rather than converting the sides and multiplying rounded figures. If you do work from dimensions, convert each side at full precision, multiply, and round only at the end — rounding both sides first can shift a room's floor area by a percent or more.
1 ÷ 0.09290304 = 10.7639 square feet. The factor looks large because a square metre is a metre on both sides: it is the length factor 3.2808 feet, squared. That is also why converting the sides of a room separately and multiplying gives the same answer as converting the finished area.
A hectare is bigger: 10,000 m² against an acre's 4,046.8564224 m², so 1 hectare = 2.4711 acres. A useful picture is that an acre is a little under half a hectare — converting hectares to acres a little more than doubles the number.
Because areas square the factor. A square foot is a foot wide and a foot tall, so in metres it is 0.3048 m × 0.3048 m = 0.09290304 m². Using 0.3048 directly would overstate every floor area by more than three times — the most common area-conversion mistake.
Either convert the finished area (multiply square feet by 0.09290304) or convert both sides to metres first and then multiply. Both give the same result if you avoid rounding in the middle; for example, 750 ft² converts directly to 69.68 m².
A square mile is 2,589,988.11 m² and an acre is 4,046.8564224 m², so 2,589,988.11 ÷ 4,046.8564224 = 640 acres exactly. That round number is a good check on any land conversion involving sections and acres.
