High School GPA Calculator

Calculate your high school GPA from class grades on the standard 4.0 scale — built for semester report cards, runs in your browser. Runs entirely in your browser — your numbers never leave this device.

The percentage is an approximate equivalent from the standard GPA anchor scale, not an exact conversion — every school district sets its own grade bands. Most high school courses carry 1 credit per year (0.5 per semester).

How it works

High School GPA = Σ grade points for all classes ÷ number of classes (or ÷ total credits where classes carry different credits)

List each class with the letter grade from your report card. Grades convert to points on the standard 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 0.7, and F = 0.0. Add the points and divide by the number of classes — most high school classes carry equal weight, so no credit-hour maths is needed unless your school assigns different credits per class.

This gives your unweighted GPA: the figure colleges most often recalculate and compare, because it treats every school on the same 4.0 footing. If your school reports a weighted GPA that boosts honours and AP classes, use the Weighted GPA Calculator alongside this one to see both numbers.

Scales vary between schools and districts: some do not use plus and minus grades at all, and some count A+ as 4.0 while others treat it separately. This calculator follows the standard table on this page exactly, so use it as a reliable estimate and compare it with your school's own handbook if your printed GPA differs.

Worked examples

Six classes, one semester

Input
Grades: A, A, B+, B, A−, A — one class each, all equal weight.
Working
Points: A = 4.0, A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, A− = 3.7, A = 4.0. Total = 4.0 + 4.0 + 3.3 + 3.0 + 3.7 + 4.0 = 22.0 points over 6 classes. GPA = 22.0 ÷ 6 = 3.667.
Result
GPA = 3.67

Five classes with a C in the mix

Input
Grades: A, B, B, C+, A — one class each, all equal weight.
Working
Points: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, B = 3.0, C+ = 2.3, A = 4.0. Total = 4.0 + 3.0 + 3.0 + 2.3 + 4.0 = 16.3 points over 5 classes. GPA = 16.3 ÷ 5 = 3.26.
Result
GPA = 3.26

All B's and one A

Input
Grades: B, B, B, B, A — one class each, all equal weight.
Working
Points: 3.0 + 3.0 + 3.0 + 3.0 + 4.0 = 16.0 points over 5 classes. GPA = 16.0 ÷ 5 = 3.20.
Result
GPA = 3.20

Frequently asked questions

What is a good GPA in high school?

On the 4.0 scale, 3.0 is a solid B average, 3.5 and above is strong, and 3.7+ puts you in range for selective colleges when combined with a rigorous course load. What counts as good depends on where you are applying — many state universities admit plenty of students in the 3.0–3.5 range — so treat any single cutoff with caution.

Should I enter semester grades or final year grades?

Use final grades for each class when you have them, because your transcript GPA is built from final course grades, not quarter or progress-report grades. If the year is not finished, enter your current semester grades to get a working estimate, then rerun it when final grades post.

Do middle school grades count toward high school GPA?

Generally no, with one exception: high-school-level courses taken in middle school, such as Algebra 1 or a foreign language, do appear on many high school transcripts and can count. Ordinary middle school classes do not. Check your district's policy if you took advanced courses early.

Is my information kept private?

Yes. This calculator runs 100% in your browser and stores nothing — your classes and grades are never uploaded, saved, or shared with anyone. There is no account and no history; closing the tab clears everything.

Why is my school's GPA different from this result?

The most common reasons are weighting and scale differences. If your school boosts honours or AP grades, its figure is a weighted GPA and will be higher. If your school ignores plus and minus grades, a B+ counts as 3.0 there instead of 3.3, which shifts the average the other way. This tool follows the standard unweighted table shown on the page.
