This is the standard US 4.0 scale. Individual schools shift the bands — a 87% is a B+ here, but your syllabus is the final word for your course.

How it works

Percentage → letter grade by band lookup (e.g. 90–92% = A−, 87–89% = B+); letter grade → its percentage band and band midpoint

The converter uses the standard grading bands shown in the table below, the same bands behind the 4.0 GPA scale: each letter covers a three-to-four-point percentage range, A = 4.0 points, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, stepping down by 0.3 or 0.4 points per band to F = 0.0 below 60%. Going from a percentage to a letter is an exact lookup — your score falls in exactly one band.

Going the other way is inherently a range, not a point. A letter grade like B− tells you the score was somewhere in 80–82%; the converter shows that full range and its midpoint (81%) for cases where a single representative percentage is needed, for example when estimating grade points. Anyone offering one exact percentage for a letter grade without stating a midpoint convention is hiding that range from you.

Individual schools adjust these bands: some use a straight 10-point scale with no plus or minus grades (90–100% = A, 80–89% = B), and some set the A band to start at 93% or 94%. This converter follows the common plus/minus table below; if your school publishes its own bands, theirs govern your transcript.

Worked examples

Percentage to letter — 88%

Input
Score = 88%.
Working
The B+ band runs from 87% to 89%. 88% falls inside that band, and B+ carries 3.3 grade points on the 4.0 scale.
Result
88% = B+ (3.3 grade points)

Percentage to letter — 94%

Input
Score = 94%.
Working
The A band runs from 93% to 96%. 94% falls inside that band, and A carries 4.0 grade points on the 4.0 scale.
Result
94% = A (4.0 grade points)

Letter to percentage — B−

Input
Letter grade = B−.
Working
The B− band runs from 80% to 82%. Its midpoint is (80 + 82) ÷ 2 = 81%. B− carries 2.7 grade points on the 4.0 scale.
Result
B− = 80–82% (midpoint 81%, 2.7 grade points)

Frequently asked questions

What letter grade is 85%?

A B, on the standard plus/minus scale used here, because the B band covers 83–86%. On a plain 10-point scale without plus and minus grades, 85% is also a B. Either way the answer is B, worth 3.0 grade points — it only changes if your school sets unusually high or low band edges.

Why does a letter grade convert to a range instead of one number?

Because the letter was created by grouping a range of scores, and that grouping cannot be perfectly reversed. A B− could have been an 80, an 81, or an 82. The converter therefore shows the band and its midpoint, which is the honest representative value when a single percentage is required.

Is an A+ worth more than an A?

In percentage terms an A+ sits higher (97–100% versus 93–96%), but on the standard 4.0 GPA scale both are worth exactly 4.0 points. A minority of schools award 4.3 for an A+, which is one reason GPA policies differ. For grade points in this converter and the GPA calculators on this site, A+ and A are equal.

Does this converter store what I enter?

No. It runs 100% in your browser and stores nothing — your percentages and letter grades are converted locally on your device and are never sent anywhere or kept after you close the page. There is no account and no history.

My school doesn't use plus and minus grades. Can I still use this?

Yes — just read the whole-letter band. Without plus/minus, an A is roughly 90–100%, a B 80–89%, a C 70–79%, a D 60–69%, and an F below 60%. The converter's table still tells you the grade points for each whole letter, which is what matters for GPA calculations.
