Weighted GPA Calculator

Calculate a weighted GPA with honours and AP or IB boosts up to a 5.0 scale — see what your harder classes add, in your browser. Runs entirely in your browser — your numbers never leave this device.

Bonuses are added to the grade points before multiplying by credits, and no course can count for more than 5.0 points per credit. Schools vary — some use different bonuses, so check your school's handbook if your number looks off.

How it works

Weighted GPA = Σ (weighted grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ credit hours, where weighted points = standard points + course-level bonus (Honours +0.5, AP/IB +1.0)
Common weighted scale: grade points by course level (whole-letter grades shown)
Course levelABCDBonus added

Honours4.53.52.51.5+0.5
AP / IB5.04.03.02.0+1.0

A weighted GPA gives extra credit for harder classes. Start from the standard 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on down to F = 0.0), then add the course-level bonus before averaging: typically +1.0 for Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses and +0.5 for honours courses. An A in an AP class is therefore worth 5.0 points instead of 4.0.

After adding the bonus, the maths is the same as a normal GPA: multiply each course's weighted points by its credits (or count each class equally if your school does), add everything up, and divide by the total. That is how weighted GPAs above 4.0 are possible, with 5.0 as the effective ceiling when every class is AP or IB level.

There is no single national weighted scale. Some schools add +1.0 for honours as well, some cap the boost, and many colleges recalculate applications on their own scale or use your unweighted GPA instead. Use this calculator with the common +0.5 / +1.0 scheme shown in the table, and adjust your expectations to your own school's published policy.

Worked examples

Three classes at three levels

Input
AP class: A. Honours class: B. Regular class: A. Each counts as one equal-weight class.
Working
AP A = 4.0 + 1.0 = 5.0 points. Honours B = 3.0 + 0.5 = 3.5 points. Regular A = 4.0 points. Total = 5.0 + 3.5 + 4.0 = 12.5 points over 3 classes. Weighted GPA = 12.5 ÷ 3 = 4.167.
Result
Weighted GPA = 4.17 (unweighted would be 3.67)

A full AP-heavy schedule

Input
AP class: A. AP class: B. Regular class: B. Honours class: A. Each counts equally.
Working
AP A = 4.0 + 1.0 = 5.0 points. AP B = 3.0 + 1.0 = 4.0 points. Regular B = 3.0 points. Honours A = 4.0 + 0.5 = 4.5 points. Total = 5.0 + 4.0 + 3.0 + 4.5 = 16.5 points over 4 classes. Weighted GPA = 16.5 ÷ 4 = 4.125.
Result
Weighted GPA = 4.13

Same grades, weighted versus unweighted

Input
Two AP classes, both graded B, each counting equally.
Working
Unweighted: each B = 3.0, so GPA = (3.0 + 3.0) ÷ 2 = 3.0. Weighted: each AP B = 3.0 + 1.0 = 4.0, so GPA = (4.0 + 4.0) ÷ 2 = 4.0. Total weighted points = 8.0 over 2 classes.
Result
Weighted GPA = 4.00 versus 3.00 unweighted

Frequently asked questions

What is the highest possible weighted GPA?

On the common scheme, 5.0 — and only if every course is AP or IB level and every grade is an A. A realistic strong weighted GPA with a mixed schedule is usually between 4.0 and 4.5. Because schemes differ by school, a weighted GPA is only meaningful alongside the scale that produced it.

Do colleges use my weighted or unweighted GPA?

Both get looked at, in different ways. Many colleges recalculate your GPA on their own standard scale from your transcript, while also noting the rigour of your course choices separately. A high weighted GPA signals challenging classes, but it does not replace the underlying grades, so do not assume the 5.0-scale figure is the one admissions will use.

How much bonus do honours classes get?

The most common scheme adds +0.5 for honours and +1.0 for AP or IB, which is what this calculator uses. Some schools add a full +1.0 for honours too, and a few use smaller steps. If your school publishes its own weighting table, compare it with the table on this page before relying on the result.

Is anything I enter saved?

No. This weighted GPA calculator runs 100% in your browser and stores nothing — your classes, levels, and grades are calculated locally and never sent anywhere. Close the page and the entries are gone.

Does an F get a weighting bonus?

No. The bonus rewards the level of the course combined with a passing performance in it; an F earns 0.0 points at every level in standard practice. Weighting lifts grades you earned — it does not soften a failing grade, which is why protecting against an F in an AP class matters more than chasing an A elsewhere.
