How it works

Grams = value × factor of the source unit (ounce = 28.349523125 g, pound = 453.59237 g, stone = 6,350.29318 g); then divide by the target unit's factor

Strictly, these units measure mass, and everyday language calls it weight. All of them are defined against the kilogram: 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg exactly, so 1 ounce (a sixteenth of a pound) = 28.349523125 g exactly, and 1 stone = 14 pounds = 6.35029318 kg exactly. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg, while a US ton (short ton) is 2,000 pounds = 907.18474 kg — the word ton alone is ambiguous, which is why this page labels each one.

The stone is the unit US-built converters most often fumble. It is still the everyday body-weight unit in the UK and Ireland: 11 stone 7 pounds means 11 × 14 + 7 = 161 pounds, which is 161 × 0.45359237 = 73.03 kg. Enter stone and pounds separately or convert the total pounds — both routes use the same exact factor.

Two more traps are worth naming. A troy ounce, used for precious metals, is about 31.10 g — not the 28.35 g avoirdupois ounce used for everything else, and this converter uses the everyday ounce. And a US ton is not a metric tonne: at 907.18 kg against 1,000 kg, confusing them understates a load by nearly 10%.

Worked examples

Kilograms to pounds and stone

Input
75 kg to pounds.
Working
1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, so 75 ÷ 0.45359237 = 165.3467 lb. In stone: 165.3467 ÷ 14 = 11.81 stone, which is 11 stone and 0.8105 × 14 = 11.3 lb.
Result
75 kg = 165.35 lb, or 11 st 11.3 lb

Pounds to kilograms

Input
180 lb to kilograms.
Working
180 × 0.45359237 = 81.6466266.
Result
180 lb = 81.65 kg

Grams to ounces

Input
500 g to ounces.
Working
1 oz = 28.349523125 g, so 500 ÷ 28.349523125 = 17.6370.
Result
500 g = 17.64 oz

Frequently asked questions

How many pounds are in a stone?

Exactly 14. A stone is defined as 14 pounds, so 1 stone = 14 × 0.45359237 kg = 6.35029318 kg. To convert a UK body weight such as 12 stone 5 lb, first make it 12 × 14 + 5 = 173 lb, then convert the pounds.

What is the difference between a ton and a tonne?

A tonne (metric ton) is 1,000 kg. A US ton (short ton) is 2,000 lb = 907.18474 kg. There is also a long ton of 2,240 lb, historically used in the UK. Because the names sound identical, this converter labels each unit explicitly rather than offering a single ton.

Is an ounce of gold the same as an ounce of flour?

No. Gold is weighed in troy ounces of about 31.10 g, while flour and almost everything else use the avoirdupois ounce of 28.349523125 g. This converter uses the everyday avoirdupois ounce. Using it for precious metals would understate the weight by roughly 9%.

Why do people say weight when the units measure mass?

In everyday use the words are interchangeable, because on Earth a 1 kg mass weighs proportionally the same everywhere people shop, cook and step on scales. The kilogram, pound and stone in this converter are the standard mass units behind those everyday weight figures.

How do I convert stone and pounds together to kilograms?

Multiply the stone by 14 and add the pounds, then multiply the total pounds by 0.45359237. For example, 10 stone = 140 lb, and 140 × 0.45359237 = 63.50 kg — which also matches 10 × 6.35029318 kg directly.
