Stopwatch & Timer

A free online stopwatch with laps and a countdown timer on one page — no app, no sign-up — timed from your device clock to a tenth of a second. Runs entirely in your browser — your numbers never leave this device.

Stopwatch
00:00.0
Ready when you are.
Countdown timer
25:00.0
Set for 25 min — press Start.

Both timers run locally in your browser tab and keep time from the device clock. They are accurate to a few hundredths of a second — plenty for cooking, workouts and presentations, but a backgrounded or sleeping tab can throttle the display refresh; the countdown re-checks the clock on every tick, so it still ends on time.

How it works

Stopwatch: elapsed = now − start + time banked before pausing | Laps: lap time = total at this lap − total at the previous lap | Countdown: remaining = set duration − elapsed, ending at exactly zero

Two instruments share this page. The stopwatch counts up from zero with tenths of a second, and its Lap button records split times: each lap row shows that lap's own duration and the running total, which is what interval training, lab work and timed rehearsals actually need. Pause banks the elapsed time so resuming continues seamlessly; Reset clears the clock and the lap table together. The countdown timer counts down from a duration you set in minutes and seconds; it announces 'Time's up' at exactly zero and waits for you — it does not silently roll into negative time or restart.

Both instruments read the device clock directly rather than counting screen refreshes. That distinction matters: a timer that adds up its own ticks drifts whenever the browser is busy, while this countdown recomputes the remaining time from the clock on every tick, so even if a backgrounded tab refreshes the display late, the timer still ends at the right moment. Display updates run about thirty times a second, giving honest tenths; hundredths would be theatre on a screen that refreshes at 60 Hz.

Everything is local and stateless. There is no account, no saved history, and nothing is uploaded — refresh the page and both instruments return to zero, which the prerendered page reflects: what a crawler or a first paint sees is exactly 00:00.0. For adding up recorded times after the fact, the Hours Calculator takes over where this tool stops.

Worked examples

Interval laps on the stopwatch

Input
Start, then press Lap at 4:00.0 and again at 10:00.0
Working
Lap 1 records a lap time of 4:00.0 at a total of 4:00.0. Lap 2's lap time is the difference: 10:00.0 − 4:00.0 = 6:00.0, at a total of 10:00.0.
Result
Lap 1: 4 min · Lap 2: 6 min · Total: 10 min

A 25-minute focus timer

Input
Countdown: Minutes = 25, Seconds = 0, press Start
Working
25 minutes = 1,500 seconds. The countdown recomputes the remainder from the clock on every tick and reaches 00:00.0 at exactly 1,500 seconds, switching to the 'Time's up' state.
Result
Counts 25:00.0 → 00:00.0, then 'Time's up'

Ninety seconds for a presentation slot

Input
Countdown: Minutes = 1, Seconds = 30
Working
1 × 60 + 30 = 90 seconds total. The same duration can be entered as Minutes = 0, Seconds = 90 — the tool adds the fields together.
Result
A 1:30.0 countdown

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the stopwatch?

It reads your device's clock directly and updates the display roughly thirty times a second, so readings are honest to about a tenth of a second — right for cooking, workouts, games and rehearsals. It is not a substitute for certified timing equipment in competition or laboratory measurement.

Does the timer keep working in a background tab?

Yes, with one caveat. Browsers throttle display updates in background tabs, so the digits may refresh less often — but the countdown recomputes the remaining time from the clock on every tick rather than counting ticks, so it still finishes at the correct moment and shows 'Time's up' when you return. A fully sleeping device can delay the visible finish until it wakes.

Is there a sound when the countdown finishes?

The finish is shown visually — the display reads 00:00.0 with a 'Time's up' state — rather than with audio. If you need an audible alarm across the room, a phone timer is the better tool; this one is built for on-screen timing at a desk.

What is a lap time versus a total time?

The total is the stopwatch reading when you press Lap; the lap time is how long that segment took — the difference between this lap's total and the previous lap's. Four minutes then six minutes gives lap times of 4:00 and 6:00 at totals of 4:00 and 10:00, as in the worked example.

Can the countdown be paused and resumed?

Yes. Pause freezes the remaining time; Resume continues from exactly where it stopped, because the remainder is stored rather than re-derived from a running clock. Reset returns the timer to its unset state so a new duration can be entered.

Is any timing data saved or uploaded?

No. The stopwatch and timer run entirely in your browser tab; lap lists vanish when you reset or close the page, and nothing is sent anywhere.
