How it works

US gallons = litres ÷ 3.785411784 (1 US gal = 3.785411784 L exactly); imperial gallons = litres ÷ 4.54609 (1 imp gal = 4.54609 L exactly)

There is no single answer to litres-to-gallons until you say which gallon. The US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 litres, so 10 litres is 10 ÷ 3.785411784 = 2.6417 US gallons. The imperial gallon, used historically in the UK and still met in Canada and older specifications, is exactly 4.54609 litres, so the same 10 litres is 2.1997 imperial gallons. This page converts to the US gallon and shows the imperial figure alongside it, because quoting one while the reader assumes the other is a 20% error — the largest silent error in everyday unit conversion.

Fuel is where it bites. A 50-litre tank is 13.21 US gallons but 11.00 imperial gallons, and a consumption figure in miles per gallon inherits the same split: a car rated in imperial MPG travels further per 'gallon' purely because the gallon is bigger. The Fuel Consumption Converter handles that direction with US and imperial MPG kept separate, the same discipline this page applies to volume.

The table lists litres against both gallons as separate columns so the two are never confused. For smaller volumes the millilitre scale is more natural — drinks and recipes live there — and the Millilitres to US Cups page covers the kitchen end. Batch mode divides a pasted list of litre values by the US factor in one pass.

Worked examples

A fuel tank

Input
50 litres to gallons.
Working
US: 50 ÷ 3.785411784 = 13.2086. Imperial: 50 ÷ 4.54609 = 10.9985.
Result
50 L = 13.21 US gal = 11.00 imperial gal

A water container

Input
10 litres to US gallons.
Working
10 ÷ 3.785411784 = 2.6417.
Result
10 L = 2.64 US gal

The exact US gallon, backwards

Input
5 US gallons to litres.
Working
5 × 3.785411784 = 18.9271.
Result
5 US gal = 18.93 L

Frequently asked questions

How many litres are in a gallon?

It depends on the gallon. A US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 litres. An imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 litres — about 20% larger. Any converter or chart that gives one figure without naming the gallon is leaving out the fact that decides whether the answer is right.

How many gallons is a 50-litre fuel tank?

13.21 US gallons (50 ÷ 3.785411784 = 13.2086), or 11.00 imperial gallons (50 ÷ 4.54609 = 10.9985). The 2.2-gallon gap between the two answers is why fuel-economy figures cross the Atlantic so badly: the same tank and the same driving produce different MPG numbers purely from the gallon's size.

Why are there two different gallons?

History. The US kept the older English wine gallon of 231 cubic inches, which works out to exactly 3.785411784 litres. Britain redefined its gallon in 1824 as the volume of 10 lb of water, later fixed at exactly 4.54609 litres, and the two systems diverged. The US gallon is the default almost everywhere gallons are used today; the imperial gallon survives in some Canadian and older UK contexts.

Does 3.785411784 litres being exact matter?

It means exactly 1 US gallon of water-volume converts with no measurement error at all: 3.785411784 L = 1.0000 US gal. Approximations like 3.79 L per gallon are fine for a single tank (they give 13.19 gal for 50 L against the exact 13.21), but they compound across a fleet, a delivery schedule or a chemical mix, which is why this page divides by the defined figure.

Can I convert a list of litre values at once?

Yes. Batch mode divides every pasted line by 3.785411784 and returns US gallons for each, which suits a set of tank capacities, container sizes or consumption records kept in litres that need gallon figures throughout.
