How it works

Required final % = (Target % − Current % × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight, where weights are decimals (40% = 0.40)

Your course grade is a weighted blend of the work already done and the final exam still to come. If the final is worth a fraction w of the grade, then the work so far fills the remaining (1 − w). The calculator rearranges that blend to solve for the one unknown: the final exam score that makes the overall grade exactly equal your target.

Enter your current grade as the average on everything except the final, and check the final's weight in your syllabus — 20%, 30%, and 40% are the most common. A heavier final means your current grade matters less and the required score sits closer to your target; a light final means your current grade mostly decides the outcome before you walk in.

Honesty matters here: if the required score comes out above 100%, the target cannot be reached even with a perfect final, and this calculator says so plainly instead of showing a fantasy number. Likewise, if it comes out at or below 0%, your target is already secured. Use those answers to pick a realistic target and aim your revision where it counts.

Worked examples

The classic case — need an A overall

Input
Current grade 88%, target grade 90%, final exam worth 40% of the course grade.
Working
The completed work carries weight 1 − 0.40 = 0.60, contributing 88 × 0.60 = 52.8 points. Points still needed: 90 − 52.8 = 37.2. Required final = 37.2 ÷ 0.40 = 93.0%.
Result
You need 93% on the final

Protecting an A with a lighter final

Input
Current grade 92%, target grade 90%, final exam worth 25% of the course grade.
Working
Completed work weight = 1 − 0.25 = 0.75, contributing 92 × 0.75 = 69.0 points. Points still needed: 90 − 69.0 = 21.0. Required final = 21.0 ÷ 0.25 = 84.0%.
Result
You need 84% on the final

An unreachable target, flagged honestly

Input
Current grade 70%, target grade 90%, final exam worth 20% of the course grade.
Working
Completed work weight = 1 − 0.20 = 0.80, contributing 70 × 0.80 = 56.0 points. Points still needed: 90 − 56.0 = 34.0. Required final = 34.0 ÷ 0.20 = 170%. Since no exam can score 170%, the 90% target is out of reach; the best possible overall grade, with a perfect final, is 56.0 + 100 × 0.20 = 76.0%.
Result
Target unreachable — maximum possible overall grade is 76.0%

Frequently asked questions

What if the calculator says I need more than 100%?

That means the target grade is mathematically out of reach, even with a perfect final exam score. It is better to know that now than during the exam. Lower the target in the calculator to find the best grade that is still achievable, and focus your effort on securing that instead.

What if I need 0% or less on the final?

Congratulations — your target is already locked in by the work you have completed. Even a zero on the final would leave your overall grade at or above the target. You still need to sit the exam in most courses, and a strong score could lift you to the next grade band, but the pressure is off.

How do I find my current grade and the final's weight?

Your current grade is your weighted average on all work except the final, usually shown in your course portal. The final's weight is in your syllabus grading breakdown. If the portal average includes categories weighted differently from the syllabus, calculate your standing with the Grade Calculator first, then enter it here.

Is my grade information private?

Yes. This calculator runs 100% in your browser and stores nothing — your current grade, target, and exam weight never leave your device and are not saved or shared. Close the tab and every trace of the calculation is gone.

Does this work for a final project or paper instead of an exam?

Yes. The maths only cares about the weight of the remaining assessment, not its format. Enter the project's weight from your syllabus in place of the exam weight and the required score is exactly the percentage you need on that project to reach your target.

Should I enter my current grade with or without the final category?

Without. Your current grade must be your average over the completed portion of the course only, because the formula applies the completed weight (1 − final weight) to it. If your portal shows an overall figure that already counts the final as a zero, it will understate your standing and inflate the required score.
